Cornforth Consultants is a 30-person specialty consulting firm focused on geotechnical engineering and engineering geology primarily in the Pacific Northwest, Mountain West, and Alaska. Our office is located in Portland, Oregon, and we are seeking a geotechnical engineer with 4 to 7 years of experience to work in our dam safety and slope stability/landslide practice groups alongside our tight-knit team of experts.
Cornforth Consultants focuses our practice on risk-based safety assessments of dams and levees, power generation & transmission infrastructure, transportation networks, water supply & distribution, and other civil works. We support public and private sector clients. Landslide and rockfall analysis and stabilization are major areas of practice for our firm. We operate a Landslide Technology division of the company to target slope stabilization projects across the United States. We are seeking to add a geotechnical engineer with 4 to 7 years of experience to our collaborative team of engineers and geologists. Our staff work in teams of 2 to 5 persons to develop projects from conceptual design through construction. Teams are typically led by project managers with 10 to 20 years of experience that are focused on mentoring junior staff and developing their technical abilities and breadth of knowledge. Our engineers typically work on several projects at a time depending on project schedule. Work tasks and responsibilities for this position include the following:

- Plan, manage, and execute site investigations for dams, levees, and landslides
- Develop and execute laboratory testing programs
- Complete design analyses and calculations to support slope stability evaluations, seepage studies, seismic site response studies, structure foundations and retaining structures
- Write geotechnical reports and/or sections of reports summarizing engineering analyses and design recommendations
- Perform specialized geotechnical inspection and design duties during construction
- Develop construction plans with assistance from technical draftsperson
- Develop construction specifications and cost estimates
- Work with senior staff to develop scopes of work and budget estimates
Our ideal candidate would possess the following attributes:
- MS degree in geotechnical or geological engineering or MS in civil engineering with geotechnical specialty
- 4 to 7 years of work experience
- EIT or PE registration depending on years of experience
- Strong background in soil mechanics
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Experience using geotechnical engineering software (e.g. GeoStudio Suite, FLAC, LPILE, MATLAB/Python)
- Experience collecting and reducing data from geotechnical instrumentation (inclinometers, piezometers, etc.)
- Basic proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Microstation
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, and apply new techniques/tools
- Ability to work effectively with project development teams of 2 to 5 persons
- Ability to work on multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Ability and willingness for some travel in the region
We are seeking someone to fill a full-time position. Salary will be negotiated based on the level of experience of the applicant. The position includes the following benefits:
